Being a personal trainer and running a small business with 3 little kids doesn't leave much time for "us" activities, even though Drew and I have been happily married for over 14 years. I didn't realize it at the time, but I got exactly what I wanted out of the Trek Dirt Series in Los Gatos. It went way beyond switchbacks and climbing over and around rocks, the basic goals I had going into the weekend. Remember, I also had fear, hesitancy and a major lack of self confidence about anything bike-related.
Underneath it all I wanted to learn to enjoy riding because it was important to Drew. Usually that's enough, but on a bike where in the past I've fallen just riding along, the desire to love it just wasn't there. I once had an OTB (over the bars) from a root that "jumped out at me". I hoped to gain a couple of skills because I knew where some of my weaknesses were on the bike, but I had no idea what that weekend would mean.
I did actually learn to love riding for the challenge, pleasure and personal growth even. It wasn't just about the future quality time with my husband. I was reminded to “better my best” through challenging and pushing my body and mind to keep going and keep growing. Not because of any other reason than growth is worth it! I no longer feel guilty about not loving one of my husband's absolute favorite pastimes. He's been patient and hopeful that it would click eventually. It was amazing to see how proud he was of me and all the work I had done every evening after camp. That would have made it worth the time, sweat, bruises and cuts. But that's not what I did it for, and not all that I learned.
What it all comes down to is that my growth as a rider this year makes me not only a better riding partner, but also a better wife, mother, sister, friend, personal trainer and business owner. I'm proud of the work that I did there, and am excited to see how the lessons translate this year into the rest of my life, my family, The New Basis community and beyond!
Next year I'm going to the women's only weekend, but Drew & I will probably go together to one of the other Trek Dirt Series camps as well. ALL levels are welcome. Who's in?!?
